Which college degrees give you the best chances of finding employment after graduation? Some students select a major because it may be valuable in the workplace. Other students choose their major simply because they enjoy the subject material. As the Mid South Community College admissions office has to analyze many applications, your goal is to stand out in a good way. Admissions application dates vary for first year students, so check with the registrar's office to request a list of major requirements, and an updated schedule of classes. You should apply to several schools as back-up choices, as well as more competitive first-tier colleges. Entrance testing dates as well as information concerning first year students may be posted on the student services website.

Admissions officers seek to learn how a given applicant thinks, and what kind of person they are. The most popular college major is business administration, split evenly between men and women. On the other hand, men make up the majority of computer science and engineering majors. For women, the fields of education, English and liberal arts dominate the list. If you choose, online education gives you the opportunity to take difficult courses that won't show up on your transcript. Alternatively, you may be able to complete online credits for a grade. Distance education may supplant high-priced textbooks, as many books are now published digitally on Kindle or Google Books.

Online Courses - MOOCs

Mid South Community College first year students
College degree majors that offer high starting-salaries after graduation include the sciences, business administration, and engineering. If you remain true to your career interests, not just going after salary, your overall job earnings will increase as you gain experience. However, if your focus is more on salary alone, there's a higher risk that you'll suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers later on.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular four-year university, and you can earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. By taking some of your required degree courses online, you may be able to graduate a semester early, thus saving money on tuition. If you're currently employed, you can take online courses in your free time to advance your career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing interactive platforms such as Blackboard, and mobile apps. Udemy is a startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Similarly, Khan Academy now offers free lecture videos served through YouTube. Then there's Coursera, a competing software platform, with millions of enrolled students from around the world. Finally, MIT announced that their open courseware platform (OCW) will be available at no cost.

Online Tests - Free Practice!

This section offers practice tests in several engineering subject areas. Each of the following multiple-choice tests has 10 questions to work on. No sign-up required, just straight to the test.

Admissions Process

Most colleges accept either the SAT or ACT, and have formulas for converting raw test scores. Colleges use these standardized tests because there are substantial differences in curricula, grading, and difficulty among US high schools. SAT test questions can be trickier and harder to decipher, while ACT questions are longer on average. On average, over half of students retaking the SAT saw improvements in their scores. Further, Advanced Placement exams are offered in a variety of physical sciences, offering you college credit for honors-level classes that you have taken while still in high school. Test yourself with practice exams online, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests.

Recent developments in college admissions include higher numbers of applicants, more foreign students, and increased use of online application forms. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice. An ideal academic record is one of increasingly better grades, in courses of progressive difficulty. About half of colleges use a waiting list, and many community colleges have agreements with four-year universities, so that the transfer of credits is ensured.

Financial Aid Information

Government scholarships and grants, combined with private scholarships, only account for a third of total college aid. Loans, earnings, and savings make up the remaining two-thirds. It costs nothing to apply for financial aid, so just do it. In fact, millions of students that would have qualified for some financial aid were late in submitting required forms, so they were passed over. The official FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov and is free. The earliest that the FAFSA form can be filled out is January of a student's senior year.

Academic scholarships are highly competitive, and are usually awarded either by the admissions office, or individual academic departments. Student loans typically have variable interest rates while federal student loans have fixed rates. Federal Direct Student Loans are funded by the US Treasury. Alternatively, student credit cards may seem like a good short-term solution, but the interest rates are high, and credit cards often carry an annual fee. The College Board Scholarship Search service advertises several thousand sources for possible scholarship funds. Some scholarships have a bond requirement. Recipients may be required to work for a specified period of time or to work in rural or remote areas.

College Inspector is the work of a group of Thai students in Bangkok, using info from the US Department of Education, Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Student activism during the civil rights movement led to the establishment of African-American studies departments across America, despite racial discrimination by student government on some college campuses. However, one of the major setbacks to Black studies and African studies programs currently is the lack of financial resources available to African-American students and university faculty. Many universities and colleges constrain Black Studies programs with small budgets, and therefore it is difficult for the departments to purchase materials and hire staff.
